“There’s no money in this for them, so they’re not investing in the kind of clinical trials that are needed,” said Dr. Tim Davis, MD, in explaining why big pharma is not showing interest in Platelet Rich Plasma. Tim is the medical director of Orthopedic Pain Specialists in Santa Monica. We first got to know him from the TV show, The Doctors.
Tim specializes in healing spinal and musculoskeletal injuries using minimally invasive procedures. And he is a well-known advocate for Platelet Rich Plasma Treatments. Tim is one of the finest ortho specialists in the nation, and has been on the spotlight since treating Lou “The Hulk” Ferrigno for a foot condition.
According to Tim, what’s stopping PRP from going mainstream is the lack of randomized, controlled trials needed to turn the many sceptics into believers. Or to put it in another way, to overcome the big pharma’s intentional neglect of the procedure.
One thing many PRP studies don’t take into account and that Tim pointed out during a presentation was that timing for administering the PRP is as important or more important than the platelet concentration.
