Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment

Can Out of Pocket PRP Injections Fight Free Surgery?
Can Out-of-Pocket PRP Injections Fight Free Surgery?

Right now, as you’re reading this, about 100 million people here in the United States are in chronic pain. A large number of them attributed to orthopedic conditions, including osteoarthritis and ligament injuries. And pain management being expensive, it not only chokes the patient’s wallet but can also cause serious emotional problems.

Surgery is one of the most common path taken. But more and more people are taking up Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections as a nonsurgical, natural alternative. One of the reasons why patients choose surgery over PRP is because the former is covered by their insurance.

Free Surgeries Are More Expensive Than Out-of-Pocket PRP Injections

FREE PROCEDURE VS A PAID PRP INJECTION

First of all, never consider a surgical procedure without getting at-least a few second opinion from professional sources. Because often, surgery can be avoided with alternative treatments. And if you do choose surgery, take into consideration the other non-monetary factors like downtime, long term side effects,  and infection to name a few. For these reasons, a “free surgery” can often be much more expensive than a paid PRP Injection.

Take for example, meniscus issues, especially tears, in the knee. PRP has responded well to peripheral tears and unquestionably justify it’s out-of-pocket expense. PRP even gives, in this situation, a better healing experience in the long run.

PRP Injections may not have all the proof it needs to be awarded the accolades it deserves. But nevertheless, it’s on it’s path to saving thousands of people’s misery. Already it’s proven in hundreds of thousands of cases to be effective in reducing pain, improving joint function and possibly slow, halt or even repair damage to cartilage.

It’s only a matter of time before PRP becomes the ultimate healing procedure. If you’re a patient, make sure your doctor knows enough about PRP treatments in order to assess its viability. If you’re a physician, have you started offering your customers PRP treatments?

5 Reason Why Medical Industry Is Shunning PRP Treatments [INFOGRAPHIC]

How PRP Treatments Are Done

In a PRP treatment, you draw blood from patient’s body and use it extract platelets and growth factors. This mixture of platelets and growth factors then heals the patient. Which means, everything that’s needed for recovery is pretty much FREE.

One patient who knows PRP is good for Meniere’s disease, an ear condition which causes a sensation of a spinning motion, vents frustration on reddit saying… “Seriously, why the HELL isn’t there any news about PRP injections for meniere’s!?!?!?”

With PRP, nothing foreign is added to the patient’s body so there is no risk of allergy, reaction or rejection. The only challenge is healing mixture to the right place. Doctors usually seek ultrasound imaging to help them with this.

Despite these advantages, the market share for PRP is close to zero compared to overall orthopedic devices market.

Why Are PRP Treatments Not Mainstream?

1. Raw materials for PRP treatment is FREE.

Since the raw materials are free for PRP treatments, the only charges are doctor’s fees. Which means the industry earns nothing for recommending PRP. Hence it’s taking a long time to take off.

2. Nothing to sell

There’s nothing to sell with PRP treatments. So PRP will not have medical representative. And so we don’t see its flyer in your local doctor’s office. No advertisements. No middlemen.

3. It’s an one-solution for all

Medical industry hates one-solution for all. But PRP can be prescribed to heal almost all your healing needs. Orthopedic injuries, cosmetic surgeries, and several other areas are proven to benefit highly from PRP. This is sure to kill a huge percentage of pharma industry. And they’re not liking it.

4. Cost for PRP Treatments are going down

Although, in its infancy, PRP treatments were expensive, widespread adoption by doctors is making it simpler and cost-effective. Almost any orthopedic surgeon can do PRP. Since there’s no complications with PRP, doctor’s love it. And cost for Platelet-Rich Plasma facial is going down too.

5. Insurance doesn’t cover PRP Treatments

This one thing is the major hurdle. And it’s the reason why PRP is only administered when all other options are exhausted. Why would a treatment this safe and devoid of side-effects be the last option?

The result?

PRP is fast growing, and it’s mostly through word-of-mouth. But the market share is nothing compared to what it could achieve. Global market for PRP was just 0.4% at 160 million dollars in 2013 compared to the orthopedic devices market which was $35.5 billion in 2013.

PRP INJECTION COSTS
PRP Injection Costs In The US

PRP Injection Costs

As PRP injections get popular, more and more people are seeking the treatment to avoid surgery. One almost insurmountable block to trying out PRP is the fact that insurance doesn’t cover it. It’s a huge out-of-pocket expense for the patients. Most often it’s the treatment of last resort before surgery.

Dennis A. Cardone, a doctor of osteopathic medicine at the New York University (N.Y.U.) Hospital for Joint Diseases, says, “A good general rule would probably be at least two to three months of failing other therapies. “

Costs can vary depending on the doctor’s experience, complexity, number of injections needed and the span of the affected region. But assuming, one injection is what you need, here are some randomly taken sample costs from across the country. All prices are estimates, true for 2015.

PRP Injection Cost New York

In New York, single injection will cost upwards of $1000. And subsequent injections might cost $800 each. Highest we’ve seen for New York is $2000 for the first injection.

PRP Injection Cost Georgia, Atlanta

In Georgia, it’s slightly lower. With a single injection costing $600-800. And subsequent injections at 500 each.

PRP Injection Cost Hartford, Connecticut

In Connecticut, patients have reported getting it done for as low as $400. Subsequent injections/area can cost $300 or less if done in a package.

PRP Injection Cost Florida

Single procedure cost $800 in Florida and subsequent injections at $650.

PRP Injection Cost New Jersey

We’ve seen many people getting it done in New Jersey for $500/injection. Subsequent injections can cost the same or less.

Platelet-Rich Plasma Facelift Costs

“Platelet-Rich Plasma Facelift,” popularized by Kim Kardashian, is a cosmetic procedure that involves injecting PRP to the face to heal uneven skin, rejuvenate and reverse aging. According to Real Self, the average cost for the procedure is $1050.

Natural Simplicity of PRP Injections
THE SECRET BEHIND PRP INJECTION’s IMMORTALITY

Not surprisingly, PRP Injections have scored a permanent fixture in the US Health care scene recently.

The reason? It’s simplicity.

The fact that there’s no external agents are at play makes PRP so attractive. Worst case, it won’t work. It’s natural, you’re just activating your body’s own regenerative mechanism. People who’ve had miraculous results like crossfit fanatic Matt Goodson, who says  “Even if you get 50 percent better and do it two or three times, I’d push this over surgery any day,” are sworn believers.

Jujitsu fan Josh who had a torn MCL on his knee says, “I would like to note that it’s been about 30hrs since the treatment and I was able to put on my pants like a normal person today. Which is actually quite huge.”

Another patient says, “PRP regenerated my partially torn bicep tendon in literally weeks, after over a year of trying various other treatments. I am a believer, for sure.”

Yet another patient, who’s been fighting his achilles tendinitis injury for 13 months, finally got PRP Injection says, 4 weeks since my treatment and the injury is about 80 percent better.”

Dr. Victor Ibrahim, MD, who’s administered more than 5000 shots to patients says, results like these are not a surprise.

Scientists and doctors like Dr. Ibrahim claim that it can heal a range of orthopedic injuries, which are the most difficult of injuries. Scores of studies have repeatedly validated the procedure for treatment of tendon injuries, damaged muscles and ligaments, and reduce arthritis. Yet, there’s not a lot of movement probably because this treatment doesn’t have the big bucks from the Pharma Lobby for support. (Why should they support? I would not be surprised if they are against this.)

Simplicity is PRP’s major, major asset. And that’s why it’s becoming so hard to ignore it.

First you draw blood from the patient, usually half an ounce. Next you spin it in a centrifuge to “force” the platelets into the blood plasma. That’s platelet rich plasma.  Finally, you inject on to the site of the injury. And repeat 2-3 times, over the next couple months if needed.

Done. For life.

Again, since there are no known side effects, the worst you can get is “no results.”

Here’s Dana Frederick White, Jr. president of the mixed martial arts organization UFC. He got PRP for Meniere’s disease, an ear condition which causes a sensation of a spinning motion. Watch his video here >>

Plus, recently, thanks to Kim Kardashian, PRP treatments are getting popular as Platelet-Rich Plasma Facelift. Bar Rafaeli has gotten it too. It’s a process where the platelet rich plasma is applied into the face, neck and decolletage immediately after microneedling the entire area. The plasma should remain on your face for at least eight hours. During this time, no washing, sweating or exposure to sun is allowed.

The result is almost “spontaneous healing” of imperfections. Body’s regeneration mechanism is artificially awakened to make skin beautiful. The results speak for themselves.

Of course, no post aboutPlatelet-Rich Plasma Facelift ends without having that famous selfie of Kim Kardashian. So here’s it.

Cost of PRP Injections

Cost varies a lot.

The guy who healed his achilles tendinitis injury paid $1200 for it. Another guy, who’s a pro-athlete, got his grade 2 MCL sprain injury treated for just $500.

AndPlatelet-Rich Plasma facials can cost anywhere between $500-$1500.

Doctors say preparation of PRP does affect the outcome. So the system you’re using to extract the platelet rich plasma is definitely important.
